Simple, but very effective app for those who study Japanese. It helps to learn Kana i.e. Katakana and Hiragana alphabets.
The app is based on the state of the art mCognito Knowledge Retaining Estimation algorithm, that is able to determine the risk of forgetting each kana symbol over time based on your history of learning. It helps to encourage the user to selectively repeat the learning and reenforce the memory by doing that.
The Learn Hiragana & Katakana app can be used in two modes:
In the Learning Mode the user is not provided whith any answer options, but needs to assess how well he or she knows each kana and then confirm if the assessment was in fact correct. It is recommended to start with this mode and complete the whole training in it before switching to the Test Mode.
In the Test Mode the user is provided by 6 answer options for each kana and the app assess the correctness of his/her answer. This is helpful to confirm that the self-assessment carried out in the Learning mode was in fact fair and objective.
The recommended approach to using the Learn Hiragana & Katakana app is to spend 10-15 minutes with it and then come back to it in few hours, repeating it until you get to the 100% knowledge. Then it is recommended to go through it in a test mode in one sitting.
After that you can start the app from time to time and it will indicate the amount of kana symbols you are under a risk of forgetting for each alphabet. Repeat the training in either Learning or Test mode if this indicator goes above 25%.

Pros and cons of Learn Hiragana & Katakana app for iPhone and iPad

Learn Hiragana & Katakana app good for

Very Nice app! I learned Katakana and Hirgana very quickly ; however they didnt put ideograms with dakuten and handakuten, which are important too. Why?
Staying in Nagoya and this has helped me read. Theres plenty of Kanji to learn still though. It would be nice if you included the consonant modifiers in the test. Not everyone is going to read the wiki. Great app though, very helpful

Some bad moments

Ive been studying Japanese for a while and have alway struggled with the Kana. I mustve downloaded and tried at least 30 different apps. This is by far the best one; and the only one thats actually been helpful for me in learning. If youre learning Japanese then this app is a MUST HAVE!
Great for reviewing, as well as a refresher. Definitely recommended. A Kanji app needs to do the same thing.
